What we're looking for

YIMBY Action and Yes In My Back Yard (YIMBY) are seeking a strategic and ambitious Senior Campaigns Manager with a depth of housing policy knowledge to lead the strategic deployment of the YIMBY Action network to advance pro-housing policy. Specifically, the Senior Campaigns Manager will direct YIMBY Action’s legislative campaigns in at least three priority states, which includes coordinating efforts between staff teams, organizing local volunteers to advocate with their elected officials, drafting and revising bill language, and developing legislative action documents/materials. This position will be part of YIMBY Action’s Organizing Team.

Responsibilities

Campaign Logistical Support and Coordination (40%)

  • Collaborate with YIMBY Action staff and key partners to identify top organizational policy priorities in federal legislation
  • Identify legislative priorities in priority states and execute campaigns to support their passage, in coordination with YIMBY Action’s Organizing team
  • Coordinate and support coalition activity in priority states to advance pro-housing legislation; this may include building new coalitions where none exist or empowering existing coalitions to be more effective at passing key legislation in the following ways:
    • Establishing meeting logistics
    • Developing key coalition sign-on materials
    • Connecting coalition partners to existing YIMBY Action resources
    • Attending coalition meetings and prepping local volunteers/Organizing Team staff for each meeting
    • Providing administrative support to meetings, including taking notes and disseminating agendas.
  • Coordinate and energize local volunteers to engage with their elected officials in support of key legislation
  • Advise and coach local Leads and coalition partners on campaign strategy, power mapping, campaign messaging, and other campaign needs
  • As campaigns develop, serve as the glue between the inside and outside game, identifying when outside activism will improve the likelihood of success, and setting up the Organizing Team to execute.
  • Continuously identify gaps in coalition function and ensure gaps are filled via personal capacity or teeing up Leads or Organizing staff.

Materials Development (20%)

  • Collaborate with the Marketing and the Organizing Teams to produce campaign support materials:
    • Letters of support
    • Public fact sheets
    • Calls to action for pro-housing activists
    • Talking points for target audiences
    • Relevant policy research
    • Press releases
  • Develop an annual legislative handbook that tracks top policies each year as a resource for policymakers, activists, and coalition partners

Policy Analysis and Recommendations (20%)

  • Maintain a detailed understanding of policy proposals as they relate to similar policies around the country and agitate local volunteers to insist on policy details that have a proven impact on housing abundance and home cost.
  • Analyze policy proposals and proposed amendments with an eye toward their impact on housing abundance and home cost, in coordination with YIMBY Action’s Policy Team.
  • Craft policy proposals and potential amendments in collaboration with local Leads
  • Stay apprised of general best practices in the abundant housing policy space, as well as relevant new findings.

Partnership Building (10%)

  • Identify potential local and national partners in priority states and connect them with YIMBY Action’s Organizing Team.
  • Prep Organizing Team members and local volunteers for conversations with potential coalition partners; provide key information needed to secure successful alliances.
  • Conduct coalition partner conversations in collaboration with local volunteers

Data Tracking and Record Keeping (10%)

  • Manage a database of contacts and interactions with federal legislators
  • Track and document state policies as they develop in legislatures across the country
  • Document relationships and opportunities with existing and potential coalition partners

Qualifications

Required

  • 5-10 years of experience with policy development and successful legislative campaign execution. Demonstrated experience in housing policy, including the ability to analyze, revise, and develop local and statewide policy documents.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the YIMBY vision; previous work or volunteer experience that is aligned with YIMBY goals. A demonstrated passion for more housing and shelter of every type, including subsidized nonprofit affordable housing, market-rate housing, transitional housing, navigation centers, and more.
  • Experience in volunteer recruitment, including attracting, engaging, and cultivating leaders within a diverse community.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively address and resolve interpersonal and organizational conflicts while fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Can effectively communicate the organization’s mission and strategic future to various audiences while building excitement about shared vision and goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a cross-team environment and to effectively coordinate contributions from diverse partners.

PREFERRED

  • Experience managing volunteers and coordinating issue-based advocacy efforts. Strong project management skills and a demonstrated ability to supervise and delegate to others in order to effectively complete complex tasks.
  • Experience designing clear calls-to-action through digital organizing tools, such as Action Network, Canva, and/or similar platforms.
  • High degree of personal organization, including the ability to track and execute on multiple simultaneous projects.

Schedule

full time

Full time 40 hours/week. Some flexibility of schedule, but evenings and weekends will be required to coordinate with volunteer Leads and most events will be held outside normal working hours.

Salary offers within our posted compensation range are based on quantity of relevant experience and demonstrated success.
